Tovolo Perfect Cube Silicone Ice Cube Tray holding my leftover tomato paste
Earlier this year I got it in my head that we needed perfectly square ice cubes to put in our cocktails, which is weird for two reasons: 1) as exhausted new parents, we weren't drinking cocktails, like, ever; and 2) who cares about perfectly square ice, really?
Even still, I ended up with these two square ice cube trays that turned out to be handy little helpers in the kitchen for uses other than just making perfect ice for Type-A personalities such as myself. These trays by Tovolo are smaller than regular ice cube trays, which I like so that they don't take up much extra real estate in the freezer. Though I haven't used them for making ice as much as I thought I would, I've found them really useful for times when I need to freeze things in portions, like chicken stock or leftover tomato sauce. I used to throw away partially used cans of tomato sauce all the time until I realized that I could just divide the leftovers in my ice cube tray and use the frozen portions bit by bit for my various recipes that call for just a tablespoon or two at a time.
So that's my tip for the week. What sorts of kitchen implements have you repurposed for handy shortcuts when cooking?
